LGBT History Month 2016 - events in Sheffield


A number of events and activities are taking place throughout February in Sheffield to mark LGBT History Month 2016.

Wednesday 3 February

E.D.E.N Film Productions - Worksop Savoy Cinema Screening 6pm

An end of project celebration and screening of the two films produced in the Heritage Lottery funded Something About Us, a project that sees young people from the Worksop-based lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender group W.O.W, researching what it was like to be LGBT in the past compared to today, especially in their local area.

The young people of W.O.W will be presented with DVD’s, certificates and posters to recognise their hard work throughout the duration of the project. There will be an Q&A after the screenings.

Friday 12 February

E.D.E.N Film Productions & The University of Sheffield - 7pm

Screening of Trashing Transphobia, a film produced by members of the LGBT community in Sheffield. Trashing Transphobia aims to tackle the discrimination that the transgender community often face. It follows Laura Holt, speaking with members of the transgender community alongside charitable organisations.

There will be an Q&A after the screenings.

Sandra Baker-Donnelly @ LGBT Café: Pride of Place / LGBT Heritage Project

You are invited to help put Sheffield’s LGBTQ history on the map at Sheffield’s first pinning party.

We want to know which places and spaces are important to you. Spaces are a vital and fascinating part of our LGBTQ heritage and include everything from bars and nightclubs and houses lived in by lesbian, gay and trans people to meeting places for LGBTQ activists.

Come and share your memories on a map of Sheffield. Your words will be added to a national online map of LGBTQ heritage that has been set up by the Pride of Place project. Any photos or other ephemera you have connected with places in Sheffield could be photographed or scanned on the day and added to the online project.

What should I bring? Plenty of cash to buy coffee in support of the LGBT Centre and any photos or other documents relating to places and spaces in Sheffield.

Sheffield Hallam will be flying the rainbow flag throughout the month at Hallam Square - keep an eye out for it! There will also be information and resources on stands at Owen Atrium Level 5 (1st-12th) and Collegiate Heart of the Campus (15th onwards).

The University of Sheffield
The University of Sheffield's LGBT+ student Committee are putting together a photo exhibition to be displayed in the Students' Union as part of their LGBT+ History Month Campaign.

The final exhibition will take pride of place during LGBT History Month (February)

Sheffield Student's Union are also marking LGBT+ History Month 2016 this February by 'celebrating the past and looking to the future'. The month will feature a varied programme of events to help us explore and discuss LGBT+ History, LGBT+ Life in Sheffield today, and Global LGBT+ Perspectives. These events are open to people of all backgrounds and identities and are all free to attend.
